Monel 502

Monel alloy 502 is similar to Monel alloy K-500, but has better machinability and can be heat treated to achieve higher strength through precipitation hardening. Its machinability is very similar to that of austenitic stainless steels (300 series). Alloy 502 has good plasticity and can be formed by conventional methods. Alloy 502 can be welded by conventional welding methods and can be heat treated or annealed for precipitation hardening.

Monel 502 can be forged in the temperature range of 2100°F to 1850°F and water quenched after forging. Alloy 502 can be hot worked in the temperature range of 2100°F to 1600°F. After hot working, it should not be left to cool slowly in air, and quenching from 1450°F or higher is recommended. Alloy K500 has good plasticity, so it can be cold worked in the usual way. The recommended annealing temperature for Monel 502 is 1900°F, followed by water quenching. The recommended aging temperature range for alloy 502 is 1100°F to 1125°F for 16 hours, followed by slow cooling with the furnace and cooling to 900°F at a rate of 25°F per hour, which is no longer sensitive at temperatures below 900°F. Major applications for Monel 502 include: pump shafts, fasteners, valve components and propeller shafts.
