Haynes 230
Haynes 230 is a carbide-reinforced Ni-Cr-W alloy with excellent strength and resistance to oxidation at high temperatures (≥980°C), and exhibits good metallurgical stability, which is easily produced by conventional processes and methods. The alloy combines good high temperature strength, creep resistance, persistent properties, and corrosion resistance, and has attractive application prospects in environments higher than 980°C.
The hot working characteristics of Haynes 230 are similar to those of Inconel 617 and 625. The alloy can be machined with large deformation in the temperature range of 1010 to 1230°C, and can be machined with small deformation at 954°C. Although it is easy to cold work the alloy by conventional processes, the alloy has a high rate of work hardening. To achieve results, the alloy should be cold worked under fine grain conditions and multiple intermediate annealing should be used. The annealing temperature prior to machining should be 1066 to 1149°C to avoid coarse crystal organization. Haynes 230 alloy has excellent forming and welding properties. It can be forged or otherwise hot worked as long as it is held at 2150°F (1177°C) long enough to bring the entire part to temperature. Alloy 230 is also easily formed by cold working due to its good ductility. All hot or cold worked parts should be annealed and cooled quickly to restore the optimum balance of properties. The alloy can be welded by a variety of techniques including gas tungsten arc welding (GTAW), gas shielded metal arc (GMAW) and resistance welding. The comprehensive properties of Haynes 230 alloy make it ideal for a variety of component applications in the aerospace and power industries. It is used in combustion tanks, transition pipes, flame retainers, thermocouple sheaths and other critical gas turbine components. In the chemical process industry, alloy 230 is used for catalyst grid supports in ammonia burners, high-strength thermocouple protection tubes, high-temperature heat exchangers, pipes, high-temperature bellows and various other critical process internals.
